POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Superintendent of Schools, the
Chief Academic Officer will be responsible for the efficient operation of units
and elements of the organization’s teaching and learning framework inclusive of
Early Learning, Creative and Performing Arts, Curriculum and Instruction,
Career and Technical Education Programs, and Instructional Support
Programs. The Chief Academic Officer
will report directly to the Superintendent of Schools and may represent and act
in the Superintendent’s stead, as directed by the Superintendent.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Manages
and oversees Early Learning, Creative and Performing Arts, Curriculum and
Instruction, Career and Technical Education Programs, and Instructional Support
Programs.
Develops
and implements procedures and strategies relating to the efficient delivery of
services;
Ensures
the proper alignment of the curriculum to state curricular goals and outcomes;
Organizes
and oversees efforts to ensure the effective articulation of the published
curriculum to the taught curriculum;
Collaborates
with the Chief Accountability Officer to develop and evaluate instructional
initiatives and strategies designed to improve instructional outcomes as
measured by state and national standards;
Assists
in overseeing the delivery of instruction for the integration of technology
into the curriculum and the selection of technology-oriented learning tools for
classrooms;
Improves
student engagement, student achievement, personalized learning and digital
literacy skills through instructional technology with other school system
personnel;
Leads the
development of personalized learning and the integration of technology into the
curriculum and optimizes the use of technology in teaching and learning;
Proposes
new ways to enhance teaching and learning, promoting innovation, improving
digital literacy skills, and fostering purposeful and meaningful integration of
technology into instruction;
Oversees
the integration of appropriate and innovative technologies to support, enhance,
and extend learning in grades PreK-12;
Advises
the Superintendent of Schools on policy and operational matters;
Develops
and prepares recommendations to improve efficiency and further the goals of the
school system;
Works
with members of the Board of Education, elected officials, community
representatives and members of the academic community to promote the interests
of the school system;
Acts for
the Superintendent in his or her absence and at various meetings, conferences,
and functions as needed and required; and
Performs
other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Thorough knowledge of the
Public School Laws of Maryland, the bylaws of the State Board of Education, and
the policies of the Board of Education of Prince George’s County;
Thorough understanding of
Maryland PreK-12 content standards and pedagogy needed to improve student
achievement;
Knowledge of the
principles of teaching and learning and the relationship to technology, as well
as the role of information and educational technology in an educational agency;
Working knowledge of
curriculum, personalized learning and the alignment of technology with the
school system’s strategic plan;
A thorough understanding
of organizational structure and have direct experience in effecting systemic
reform;
Ability to use computer technology
in an administrative and educational setting;
Excellent organizational
ability;
Demonstrated oral and
written communication; and
Excellent human relation
skills.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Master’s degree from an accredited college or university with
course work in educational administration, education, and curriculum
development required; Doctorate degree preferred. A minimum of ten (10) years of administrative
experience in a school or academic setting required.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Holds or is eligible for Maryland Professional Certificate with
Administrator II endorsement; holds or is eligible for Superintendent’s
endorsement.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Oversees
and provides guidance and direction to unit staff.
