POSITION SUMMARY:
This is a Career Academy position that
supports the successful implementation and management of the Academy model at
the assigned school. The teacher instructs students in the technical or
occupational skills of the professional trade. The teacher will develop,
select, and modify instructional plans and materials and present them using
instructional techniques, which meet the needs of all students. The teacher
will provide an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual,
physical, social and emotional development of students. This position monitors
and evaluates student performance, develops and implements plans to improve
student achievement, and maintains required records; and follows PGCPS required
procedures and practices. The teacher will be
responsible for preparing students to successfully take and pass the NCCER
certification exams at the completion of the program.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Establishes
clear goals and objectives related to the School Improvement Plan;
Plans
and prepares lessons, assignments, and instructional materials;
Establishes
learning objectives consistent with appraisal of student needs, curriculum
framework, and knowledge of human growth and development;
Prepares,
administers and corrects evaluations and assessments, and records results;
Selects
and uses appropriate instructional strategies including, but not limited to,
lectures, group discussions, demonstrations, modeling and multimedia teaching
aids to present subject matter to students;
Evaluates
student progress using appropriate assessment techniques;
Maintains
order and discipline in the classroom conducive to effective learning and takes
all necessary safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and
facilities;
Creates
a classroom environment that provides for student involvement in the learning
process and enables each student to achieve learning objectives;
Counsels
pupils when academic and adjustment problems arise;
Confers
with parents and students regarding progress/problems of assigned students;
Arranges
and participates in teacher-parent or teacher-student conferences as necessary;
Maintains
accurate and complete records as required by law, Board Policy and
Administrative Procedures;
Monitors
appropriate use and care of equipment, textbooks, materials and facilities;
Attends
and actively participates in staff/faculty meetings and provides input
regarding the planning of instruction goals, objectives and methods;
Improves
skill and knowledge base in current trends, research and methodology in
instructional techniques, technology, multi-cultural content, problem solving
and interdisciplinary connections;
Plans
and supervises purposeful assignments for paraprofessional educators, student
teachers, and volunteers;
Collaborates
with the school Academy team and Central Office to fully implement the Career
Academy model with fidelity;
Works
with school Academy team and Central Office to implement content literacy
standards uniformly across the curricular areas;
In
conjunction with the school Academy team and Central Office produces and
implements multi-disciplinary, project-based learning experiences for students;
Participates
with Academy team members to develop appropriate intervention and enrichment
strategies for identified students for use in the classroom and though other
delivery methods (e.g. after-school); and
Performs
other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Must have at least
three (3) years documented industry experience, with two years being full-time;
Journeyman
Masonry License and/or Master Mason preferred;
NCCER
Instructor Certification preferred;
Knowledge of school
organization, goals and objectives, curriculum, teaching techniques, current
trends, research, and materials of instruction in field of specialization;
Excellent knowledge
and understanding of teaching and learning process;
Ability to provide
instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural education;
Ability to work with
diverse populations;
Ability to infuse
technology into curriculum;
Ability to work
effectively with students, parents, administrators, colleagues, community, and
other school system staff; and
Excellent oral and
written communication skills.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor's degree or higher in a
state-approved career and technical program or in the career area to be taught
from an accredited college/university; or Associate’s degree in the career area
to be taught or a Bachelor’s degree not related to the career area to be taught
and official verification of two (2) years of satisfactory occupational
experience in the career area to be taught; or Secondary School Diploma or
equivalent and official verification of three (3) years of satisfactory
occupational experience.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Holds or is eligible for a Professional
Certificate appropriate to area of assignment issued by the Maryland State
Department of Education.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
No direct supervisory responsibilities.

This teaching position is part of the construction trades pathways in the Academy of Architecture and Design. Teachers within this Academy work collaboratively across school lines to develop and implement high quality programs that reflect real-world occupational and professional needs that comprise the expansive enterprise of construction.
