POSITION SUMMARY:
The
Classroom Teacher provides for instruction of students by developing,
selecting, and modifying instructional plans and materials and presenting them
using instructional techniques which meet the needs of all students. The
teacher provides an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual,
physical, social and emotional development of students. This position monitors
and evaluates student performance, develops and implements plans to improve
student performance, and maintains required records and follows required
procedures and practices.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Provides
instruction and leadership for the implementation of the academic program;
Coordinates testing
program implementation;
Plans, organizes, and
delivers instruction in accordance with Core Learning Goals;
Implements
alternative educational strategies appropriate to an at-risk population;
Provides skill
knowledge development to prepare students for state assessments;
Facilitates the
program of computer-assisted learning;
Participates with
other alternative school staff in developing an individualized instructional
plan for each student;
Contacts the base
schools where the juveniles formerly attended for educational records, programming, assignments, grading, graduation
requirements, transcripts, etc.;
Contacts parents
concerning the incarcerated juveniles educational progress and needs;
Provides special
education instructional services for students with IEPs;
Facilitates the
writing and updating of IEPs for incarcerated special education juveniles;
Evaluates student
credits to determine graduation requirement needs;
Contacts local
colleges for juveniles who may be aspiring to attend college;
Procures
instructional materials and resources for curriculum implementation, testing,
and special education reporting;
Collects data for
instructional program reviewing;
Prepares program
reports;
Attends Department of
Alternative Educational Options administrative meetings once every week
representing the Incarcerated Youth Program; and
Performs other duties
as assigned.

Ability to work with diverse

Knowledge of school organization,
goals and objectives, curriculum, teaching techniques, current trends,
research, and materials of instruction in field of specialization;
Excellent knowledge and understanding
of the teaching and learning process;
Ability to provide instruction that
reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural education;
Ability to infuse technology into
curriculum;
Ability to work effectively with students,
parents, administrators, colleagues, community, and other school system staff;
and
Excellent oral and communication
skills.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor's degree required in applicable field of
education from a regionally accredited college or university.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Holds
or is eligible for a Professional Certificate appropriate to area of assignment
issued by the Maryland State Department of Education (Algebra and Geometry).
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervision of classroom
paraprofessional(s) and dedicated or classroom assistants, if applicable.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.
