POSITION SUMMARY:
The Superintendent of Schools, in accordance with the Public
School Laws of the State of Maryland, is responsible for and has commensurate
authority to accomplish the fulfillment of the duties of this office. The Superintendent of Schools may delegate to
personnel of the Prince George’s County Public Schools appropriate portions of
his/her responsibility together with proportionate authority for their
fulfillment. As the Superintendent of
Schools and Treasurer of the Board of Education, he/she is responsible for the
administration of the public schools in accordance with Board of Education
policies, the Public School Law of Maryland and the Bylaws of the State Board
of Education.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Keeps the Board of Education informed of the
needs and accomplishments of the school system so that the Board can act wisely
in the adoption of school policies and in consideration of his/her
recommendations;
Exercises general administrative control over
the school system;
Seeks to maintain and increase public interest
in the schools and to improve educational conditions within the county;
Improves pupil skills in reading, mathematics
and writing;
Maintains a productive and safe school
environment;
Provides viable educational options for all
children and youth;
Strengthens procedures for accountability and
evaluation;
Improves student attendance;
Improves management skills at all levels;
Increases staff development and in-service
training opportunities for all school system employees;
Forges a true partnership with parents and the
wider community in the education of our children and youth;
Develops cooperative efforts with business and
industry; and
Performs other duties as the Board may
determine for the efficient and effective operation of the school system.
QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Thorough knowledge of the Public School Laws of
the State of Maryland and Bylaws of the State Board of Education, and the
policies of the Board of Education of Prince George’s County;
Stimulated by the challenge of planning,
implementing and evaluating new approaches to the solution of educational
problems;
Ability to communicate and interpret
effectively the philosophy, the programs and the needs of the school system;
Ability to use computer technology in an
administrative and educational setting;
Effective written and oral communication
skills; and
Effective human relations skills.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Doctorate degree preferred with major in Educational
Administration and/or education with considerable experience as a school
administrator in increasingly responsible positions.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Eligible
for Superintendent’s certification.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Oversees
the operation of the school system.
