POSITION SUMMARY:
Under direction of
the Coordinating Supervisor of Interscholastic Athletics the Supervisor of Interscholastic
Athletics plans, develops, monitors, evaluates and assists schools with
implementing the Interscholastic Athletics Program. The incumbent of this position develops
schedules, program guidelines and budgets; assists in the selection and
evaluation of athletic directors and coaches as appropriate; interprets program
standards, policies and regulations to staff, the Board of Education and the
public; serves as liaison to the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic
Association, Prince George’s County Public Secondary Schools Athletic
Association and National Federation of State High School Associations in the
absence of the Coordinating Supervisor.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Supervise, manage and
oversee the Interscholastic Athletic Program for 22 High Schools, 34 Middle
Schools, 17 varsity sports, 10 junior varsity sports and corollary athletics;
Monitor and oversee
overall athletic program to ensure compliance with Title IX, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA),
state compliance with Maryland
Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) regulations, PGCPS policies and regulations,
National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) and the Prince George’s County
Athletics Association (PGCAA);
Analyze collected
data for athletics participation survey, enter results and submit to MPSSAA and
NFHS;
Serves as liaison for
Interscholastic Athletics, communicating with local, regional, nation
organizations and colleges to maintain updated policies and procedures on
current athletic issues, i.e., college admissions, concussions, drug abuse,
training practices, etc.;
Plans and conducts
county-wide meetings for high school athletic directors, high school principals
and coaches, while producing and distributing minutes of all minutes;
Interprets program
standards, policies and regulations to staff, the Board of Education and the public;
Updates and
implements guidelines and procedures governing interscholastic athletics,
prepares and distributes appropriate communications as needed;
Coordinates the master schedules for
all interscholastic athletic programs;
Coordinates
transportation for the interscholastic athletic program;
Develops training
sessions and staff development for the all athletic directors and all middle
and high school coaches;
Prepares and updates
the PGCPS athletic handbooks, guidelines and websites;
Assists in the selection,
assignment and evaluation of athletic directors and coaches as appropriate;
Develop criteria
procedures and instruments necessary to effectively evaluate the
Interscholastic Athletics Program;
Prepares projected
budgeted needs for the department, liaison between the Budget Office and
Athletics Office, responsible for establishing procedures for collecting,
accounting and processing of athletics fees from 22 high schools;
Manage, prepare,
approve and assist in processing athletic payroll for all interscholastic
coaches and workers;
Updates and
implements guidelines and procedures governing interscholastic athletics;
Updates educational
specifications for school construction, participates in planning, design and
approval process for equipment and facilities;
Provides liaison with
newspaper, radio and television sports departments, provide communications as
needed; and
Performs related
duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Thorough knowledge of
the Interscholastic Athletic Programs of the State of Maryland and Prince
George’s County;
Thorough knowledge of
the federal, state and PGCPS policies, procedures, rules and regulations
related to athletics;
Knowledge of current
research, trends and federal, state and local laws and regulations governing
athletics;
Working knowledge of
Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint Oracle Financial Applications, Oracle
iExpense, Oracle iProcurement, Oracle iRecruitment, along with other computer
applications; and
Excellent
organizational skills, along with excellent oral and written communication
skills as well as human relation skills.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Master’s
degree from an accredited college or university with five (5) years of
successful teaching experience, and background in the administration and
supervision of high school athletics.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Maryland SPC/APC with
endorsement as Administrator I.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Oversees and directs
the work of athletic directors and coaches.
