POSITION SUMMARY:


  Under the direction of the Coordinating Supervisor, the Supervisor of Science (PreK-12) is responsible for monitoring department programs and initiatives and executing administrative responsibilities as required. The Supervisor of Science (PreK-12) assists the Coordinating Supervisor and the Director of Curriculum and Instruction in developing an aligned curriculum documents, providing professional development for staff, and developing a budget based on analysis of needs. Special assignments are received through conferences, written instructions, ad requests from the Director to the Coordinating Supervisor.    

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

 

Supervises the development and implementation in the areas of elementary, middle and high school science curriculum, instruction, and classroom management of science materials;

Providing both short and long-range planning for the improvement of the science program;

Supervises and coordinates the development and implementation of a professional development program for teachers of science, including the designing and teaching of state approved workshops, summer institutes, after school programs, and science leadership conferences;

Evaluates and monitors the preparation of curriculum documents, correlation of instructional material documents, and units of study;

Supervises the acquisition, distribution and monitoring of instructional resources correlated to the science curriculum frameworks (e.g., texts, software, computers, audiotapes, etc.);

Provides regional and school-level workshops on curricular issues, teaching strategies, and behavior management in collaboration with the Department of Staff Development and School Leadership;

Leads PreK-12 teacher leaders and other science coaches in assisting teachers directly with aligning classroom strategies to the Maryland State Curriculum;

Develops and oversees all aspects of grants as it relates to this program;

Assists in the management of budgets and purchase orders;

Plans and implements special events in science including the Regional Science Fair and Kids for Science;

Monitors the implementation of the science program district wide;

Oversees projects as designated by the coordinating supervisor;

May observe and evaluate science teachers;

Identifies items for Formative Assessments in MSA Grade 5 and 8 and HAS Biology;  and

Prepares and submits reports as required by Director of Curriculum and Instruction.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

Minimum five (5) years of science teaching experience required in middle and/or high school;

Minimum of three (3) years supervisory or specialist experience required;

Knowledge of current trends in science education, including constructivist pedagogy, performance-based assessment, laboratory safety, and designing of science facilities;

Demonstrated competence in developing and leading staff development sessions for teachers, principals, and parents;

Knowledge of state standards and alternative modes of assessment;

Experience in writing curriculum framework guides for science or an integrated curriculum desired;

Demonstrated experience in writing and managing grants and budgets preferred;

Thorough knowledge of science pedagogy and science current best practices required;

Experience in leading staff development initiatives;

Ability to analyze student performance and participation data;

Knowledge of state standards, benchmarks and alternative assessment, PreK-12;

Extensive expertise in the design, implementation, and evaluation of professional development programs and initiatives;

Understanding and expertise in implementing accommodations and modifications;

Effective planning and organization skills, as well as the ability to multi-task and meet deadlines;

Experience working with state, county and/or federal agencies;

Experience working with computers and other technology; and

Demonstrated skill in effective human relations and in oral and written communications.

 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


 

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in any science content or Science Teacher Education Degree; and Master’s degree required in Curriculum and Instruction, Science Education, School Administration and Supervision or Education.

 

 



CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:


 

Advanced Professional Certificate; Administrator I certification required and Certification in secondary science education required.


 



SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:


 

Assists in overseeing and providing guidance to the unit staff/teachers.
