POSITION SUMMARY:
Employee
is responsible for the safety and comfort of handicapped and elementary school children
riding on a school bus; does related work as required. Work is performed under the supervision of
the Bus Driver and Bus Driver Foreman.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Helps
children on and off bus;
Aids
children in crossing street;
Loads
and unloads children in wheel chairs;
Assists
in keeping discipline on school bus;
Places
children in seat belts, making sure they are securely fastened;
Discusses
with the school Principals and parents problems which arise on bus;
Assists
children who become ill on bus; and
Makes
and prepares reports.
QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Good
knowledge of care and discipline of handicapped and children with special
needs;
Ability
to deal patiently and effectively with children;
Ability
to deal courteously and effectively with school Principals and parents;
Sincere
interest in helping children who are handicapped and have special needs and in
their safety;
Physical
strength and agility; and
Willingness
to work in varying and adverse weather conditions; patience and understanding;
good physical condition.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Some experience in working with physically handicapped
and/or children with special needs and completion of a standard high school
course preferably supplemented by training in child behavior and traffic
safety; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides
the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
No direct supervisory responsibilities.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs. and/or 100 lbs. when operating a wheelchair lift and assisting a special-needs student.
