POSITION SUMMARY:
The
primary responsibilities of positions in this class are related to the
operation of passenger vehicles, pick-up trucks and vans for the purpose of
picking up and delivering furniture, equipment, supplies and mail; however,
other duties may be required such as participating in warehouse or mail room
activities. Typically a Working Truck Driver is responsible for loading and
unloading the vehicles and is required to follow a pre-established route and
maintains a strict daily schedule in making pickups and deliveries to locations
within and outside the school system. Work is supervised principally through
appraisal of the effectiveness with which deadlines or schedules are maintained
as well as the accuracy and care in making pickups and deliveries.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Checks vehicle to insure proper water level, fuel, oil,
and tire pressure levels; observes and reports vehicle malfunctioning;
Drives vehicles according to pre-established routes and
maintains a strict daily schedule; delivers a variety of items to schools and
other activities throughout the County; picks up and delivers items to central
offices as well as to other schools and activities;
Picks up items at other locations and delivers same,
e.g., foodstuffs and commodities for cafeteria use;
Moves furniture, file cabinets and other equipment;
Participates in storing mail and packages; assists in
filing warehouse orders;
Loads and unloads vehicles; and
Performs related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Working knowledge of the operation and care
characteristics of passenger vehicles and trucks;
Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions
involved in vehicle operation;
Working knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances, and rules
to be observed in the State of Maryland relative to vehicle operation;
Skill in the safe and efficient operation of passenger
cars and trucks;
Ability to observe or detect needed vehicle repairs and
to report these repairs to proper authorities;
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written
instructions;
Ability to perform assigned tasks in a responsible fashion without immediate
supervision;
Ability to relate well with schools or agencies serviced;
Ability to keep routine records and to make summary
reports from such records; and
Must be in good physical condition and have ability to
lift heavy articles.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Completion of a standard high school diploma or GED with
some experience in the operation of vehicles and the loading, unloading and
delivery of material and equipment; or any equivalent combination of experience
and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to
perform this job.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Possession
of an appropriate and valid Maryland Motor Vehicle Operators License (CDL) with
driving record indicating five (5) or fewer current points of which no more
than three (3) shall have been accumulated as a result of traffic violations
occurring while operating a Board of Education vehicle.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
No direct supervisory responsibilities.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, talk, hear, walk, sit, and use fingers, tools or controls. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, the ability to adjust focus, and depth perception. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.
