The William S. Schmidt Environmental Center offers assistance in the planning and construction of gardens at county school sites. Specializing in the construction of raised beds for produce, butterfly, or native plantings gardens; center staff can be utilized by school staff in a variety of ways. Schools are responsible for construction material purchasing, while the center can provide some tool and construction support. Composting stations created from repurposed plastic drums or wooden pallets are also available.  These projects can provide many curriculum-based  learning opportunities for students in the areas of biology, botany, measurement, life cycles, and the study of interspecies relationships. With the wide variety of campus layouts throughout the county, each project presents its’ own unique attributes and challenges. These projects often go hand in hand with our rain barrel program as well. For further information regarding garden and green space refurbishing or creation at your campus, please contact either Mr. Steven Hartling or Mr. Travis Long at the Schmidt Center through email or by calling 301-888-1185. Due to schedule restraints, the number of schools that receive support from this initiative will be limited to our staff availability. Keeping this in mind, it is helpful to have some prior planning in place such as designated persons responsible for upkeep, sources for funds, and cooperation of building supervisors and support staff.
