POSITION SUMMARY:Performs manual labor of more than ordinary difficulty, which often involves the use of acquired skills. Employees in this class perform routine work involving the use of some skills acquired by experience or on-the-job instruction. This work requires more than the usual physical strength and endurance required by a Laborer II because of the continual lifting of heavy cans of trash for eight (8) or more hours a day and in the operation of some specialized motorized equipment and truck driving. Work is supervised principally through appraisal of the effectiveness with which work is completed and schedules maintained.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Works
with a refuse truck driver in the removal of refuse; Takes
the lead in digging and bracing ditches; Pours
concrete and fills pavement cracks with asphalt and shovels and rakes asphalt
paving mix in repairing of walks, pads, swales and playgrounds; Builds
forms for curbs, gutters and sidewalks and performs other tasks in construction
or maintenance; Maintains
baseball diamonds, tennis courts and football fields in playing condition; Diggs
and hand fills ditches; Prunes
shrubbery and lays new sod; Plants
and works ground around trees, shrubs and flowers; Performs
a variety of other manual work in assisting tradesmen, motor Equipment
Operators and others in connection with the maintenance of school buildings and
grounds; and Performs related work as required.
QUALIFICATIONS Good
knowledge of a variety of semi-skilled maintenance and manual tasks; Ability
to understand and follow oral and written instructions; Ability
to read and write; Willingness
to perform heavy manual work for an extended period under varying weather
conditions; and Must
be in excellent physical condition.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Completion of vocational or trade school course, with progressively responsible experience in performing semi-skilled maintenance or construction tasks; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Possession of an appropriate and valid Maryland Motor Vehicle Operator’s License with driving record indicating five (5) or fewer current points of which no more than three (3) shall have been accumulated as a result of traffic violations occurring while operating a Board of Education vehicle (see Prince George’s County Public Schools Bulletin P-1-88, dated July 21, 1987 and Administrative Procedure 4111, dated December 1, 2015).
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: No direct supervisory responsibilities.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. While performing duties of this job, the employee must have the strength and dexterity to perform all required tasks including the ability to climb a 40' vertical ladder, work from scaffolding and a bucket truck, the ability to lift and carry a minimum of 80 lbs., work in cramped interior spaces, and the ability to do extensive walking, bending, stooping, crawling and kneeling in the course of completing daily work assignments. The employee is required to maintain sustained physical effort and some exposure to dust, dirt, chemical solutions, solvents, odors, and adverse weather conditions.
