POSITION SUMMARY:The Welder II performs skilled work in the welding and repair of equipment which involves skill in the use of acetylene and electric arc welding equipment. Skill is also required in handling and applying welding of flux materials and in performing all types and phases of welding work. The incumbent works in conjunction with the Plumbing Shop to make welds and repairs to pressure boilers, associated piping, equipment and systems.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Performing
skilled work in the welding and repair of equipment; Making
all welding repairs and installations related to low pressure boilers, piping,
equipment and systems; Making
welding repairs on trucks, bulldozers and other equipment; Fabricating
truck beds, body frames of school buses and equipment adaptations; Welding
gearshift levers, flywheels, motor gear castings, brake levers, wheels and
axles; Welding
broken equipment bodies and operating parts; Repairing
and overhauling welding equipment to keep it in good working condition; Straightening
and repairing scrapers, shovels, blades, crushers and other equipment; Building worn shafts and gears with welding material
and machines to correct size; Welding
doors, doorframes, hinges and hasps; Working
in conjunction with the Plumbing Shop to make welds and repairs to pressure
boilers, piping, equipment and systems; Repairing
plates, air tanks, and various fixtures; Operating
electric arc or acetylene welder or cutting torch; and Supervising
the work of a Welder I.
QUALIFICATIONS Thorough
knowledge of methods used in welding, cutting, brazing and heating metals; Ability
to follow oral and written instructions; mechanical aptitude; manual dexterity;
Considerable
experience in acetylene and arc welding; Thoroughness
and dependability; and
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Completion of a standard high school or trade school course, preferably including training in general shop work.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Possession of an AWS D1.1 certification at time of interview; possession of an appropriate and valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license with driving record indicating five (5) or fewer current points of which no more than three (3) shall have been accumulated as a result of traffic violations occurring while operating a Board of Education vehicle (see Prince George’s County Public School’s Bulletin A-26-85 dated October 8, 1984).
