POSITION SUMMARY:Under the direction of the Director of Technology Operations, the SeniorSystems Engineer will be responsible for providing technical support to schools and administrative offices in the Prince George's County Public Schools. The Senior Systems Engineer is responsible for resolving problems that arise from the use of enterprise computer servers and network technologies. Work responsibilities include providing troubleshooting assistance through on-site visits for servers, SAN, and network/hardware problems. The position reports to the Director Technology Operations within the Department of Information Technology.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Resolve system, server,
SAN, fiber channel, network (LAN/WAN) hardware and application problems; Bring new systems
on-line and integrate in current environment; Provide support for
multiple environments and technologies; Perform backups and
recoveries as needed; Configure and tune
monitoring systems; Ensure that patch
levels are kept current; Perform performance
testing and tuning, serve as technical expert to research, plan, design, and
implement systems, networks, storage for data, video and voice; Identify opportunities
for improvement, make proposals and participates in the planning and implementation
of new and enhanced technologies or services within area of expertise; Plans, tests, and
prepares, as well as potentially oversees, the implementation of new or
enhanced infrastructure; Identifies, develops,
and updates standards and procedures, ensuring products comply with existing
standards and procedures; Assist and provide
assistance/direction to operations staff, systems engineers, DBAs and
programmers with particularly complex or difficult issues related to area of
expertise; Assist in creating and
documenting policies and procedures; Clearly communicate
problem/resolution process to customers or management. Support other engineers
with technical troubleshooting as needed; Regularly assist in
orienting, training, assigning and checking coworkers work for accuracy and
compliance against established best practices; Serve as liaison to
vendors to facilitate problem resolution; Participate in the
change control process; Provide on-call
support; Provide technical input
for policies and procedures; Develop and maintain
accurate documentation for server, workstation, network, etc.; Adhere to Change
Management policies and procedures; Adhere to SOR
(Significant Occurrence Report) procedures and notifications; Contributes to
architectural standards and ensures architecture is aligned with organizational
strategy; Perform advanced
troubleshooting and problem resolution; Extensive knowledge of
backup systems, e.g. Rubric. Understand database products including Oracle,
Microsoft SQL; Knowledge of ITIL; Able to support system
engineers with AIX, Red Hat operating systems, Windows server, VMWARE and MS
Hyper-V, Firewall, and Web content filtering; Install, modify and
make minor/major repairs to computer hardware; Installs and configures
computer operating systems; Installs and builds
“standard” server images; Installs or assists
service personnel in the installation of peripheral components such as
monitors, keyboards, mice, printers, disk drives and scanners; Resolve complex network
and wiring problems; Perform Windows, UNIX
and Redhat System Admin support as directed by supervisor; Provide technical
assistance and training to users; Ability to write
scripts in DOS, PowerShell, JAVA and other various UNIX and windows
technologies/platforms; Perform duties as
directed by supervisor; and Excellent written and
verbal communications skills.
QUALIFICATIONS Must have expert knowledge
of and skills in administering computer systems and network infrastructure to
serve as technical authority in advising management for purposes of long-range
planning; Skill set
understanding of Firewalls, Network and IT Security and ISDN; Development of standards and
guidance, and evaluation of overall operational systems; Executes duties
accurately and as directed by supervisor or designee; Completes
task(s) on time and in their entirety, documents work and configurations; Must have extensive skills
as a systems administrator in support of Microsoft, and desktop and server
operating systems, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, LDAP, Kerberos, server
virtualization technologies and IIS and Apache/Tomcat administration; and Have the
ability to work cooperatively as a team member; effective human relations
skills; good oral and written communications skills; willingness to work a
flexible schedule.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in information technology or related field with a minimum of five (5) years related work experience. In leiu of a Bachelor’s degree, a minimum of ten (10) years of experience in any combination of the following areas may be considered: server administration throughout the IT lifecycle; server virtualization experience using VMware, Microsoft Hyper-V technologies; network administration including integrating multiple routing protocols, interoperability with multi-vendor network equipment or vendor networks; desktop administration including deployment, configuration, and removal of software on a large, remote fleet of computers; datacenter design and management of servers, storage, network, security, power, and cooling; and/or experience managing web content filtering, voice and video networks.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Aruba networking, CISCO, Brocade, Juniper, VMware, Microsoft Hyper-V, SAN certifications preferred.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: No direct supervisory responsibilities.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Must have a valid active Driver’s License in good standing and reliable transportation. Be available to respond to events on-site within Prince George’s County Public School System. Must be able to keep confidential information. Frequently required to work long hours; and Annual leave may be limited during specified timeframes.
