POSITION SUMMARY: The Classroom Teacher - Environmental Literacy Outreach works with PGCPS students (Pre K – 12) and teachers to increase their knowledge and make informed decisions that create and maintain an optimal relationship between themselves and the environment. The Classroom Teacher - Environmental Literacy Outreach will focus on working directly with students and schools to support environmental education programs that enhance learning opportunities and the effective implementation of the MSDE Environmental Literacy Standards.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Working directly with
schools to develop and implement programs that support the Environmental
Literacy Standards as well as provide students with an opportunity to examine
local, regional and global environmental issues; Providing support
that encourages schools towards MD Green School certification; Provide support to
schools applying for the U.S. Green Ribbon award; Support Environmental
Literacy efforts with an emphasis on social studies and science content; Writing grants that
support the implementation of environmental literacy in PGCPS; Locating and sharing
helpful websites that provide information and support for teachers and students
in the area of environmental education; Working with outside
organizations to develop greater collaboration with PGCPS as it relates to
providing greater learning opportunities for students, teachers and
administrators in the area of environmental literacy; Assisting schools
with the implementation of their on-site environmental projects and programs; Conducting and
assisting with special programs and initiatives at the William S. Schmidt
Outdoor Education Center; Assisting and
developing a comprehensive plan for PGCPS that addresses the state graduation
requirement found in the environmental literacy standards; Provide professional
development for teachers and administrators in the area of environmental literacy; Assist with the
planning and implementation of summer environmental programs held at the
Schmidt Center; and Performing related
work as required by the Instructional Supervisor of Environmental Education,
Coordinating Supervisor for Academic Programs, or Director of Curriculum and
Instruction.
QUALIFICATIONS Demonstrates superior
knowledge of pedagogy as it relates to best practices in science program
implementation and development; Thorough knowledge of
MSDE Environmental Literacy Standards; Thorough knowledge of
MD Green School certification requirements; Knowledge of current
trends in science education, including Science, Technology, Engineering and
Mathematics (STEM), Next Generation Science Standards; Common Core State
Standards, and College,
Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework for Social Studies State Standards; Knowledge of websites
that support environmental education; Background or
experience in grant writing; Ability to relate
positively with students, teachers, central office personnel and the general
public; Experience in
operating standard office equipment and office software including database,
spreadsheet, web page development, etc.; Communicate effectively
both in written and oral form with diverse groups; Excellent written
communication; and Possesses superior
public speaking abilities.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree required, course work or experience in environmental education, outdoor education, science, or social studies preferred; Master's Degree preferred; minimum of three (3) years of successful teaching experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Current Maryland Teaching Certificate, elementary or secondary certification.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: No direct supervisory responsibilities.
