POSITION SUMMARY:Under the direction of the Master Foreman, the Steamfitter lays out, assembles, installs, and/or maintains pipe systems, pipe supports, or related hydronic or pneumatic equipment for steam, hot water, heating, cooling, lubricating, sprinkling, or industrial production or processing systems.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Cuts, threads, welds, and/or presses pipes to specifications, using tools such as saws, cutting torches, pipe threaders, or pipe benders;

Assembles or secures pipes, tubes, fittings, and related equipment, according to specifications, by welding, brazing, cementing, soldering, or threading joints;

Measures materials and objects for installation or assembly;

Inspects, examines, and tests installed systems and pipe lines, using pressure gauge, observation, and/or other methods;

Inspects plumbing/hydronic/sprinkler systems;

Attaches pipes to walls, structures, and fixtures, such as radiators, AHU’s, univents, or tanks, etc., using brackets, clamps, tools, or welding equipment;

Welds/threads metal components;

Modifies, cleans, or maintains pipe systems, units, fittings, and related machines or equipment, using hand or power tools;

Cleans equipment and facilities;

Selects pipe sizes, types, and related materials, such as supports, hangers, or hydronic cylinders, according to specifications;

Selects construction materials;

Cuts or bores holes in structures, such as bulkheads, decks, walls, and mains, prior to pipe installation, using hand and/or power tools;

Installs gauges or controls;

Operates motorized pumps to remove water from flooded manholes, basements, and facility floors.

Oversees the work of Apprentices and Trades Helpers;

Contributes to the evaluation process of employees; including progressive discipline;

Enters materials, labor hours, status and details of  work done into the online work order management system; and

Performs related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Comprehensive knowledge of standard tools, equipment and practices used in the Plumbing HVAC trade;

Knowledge of the hazards and the necessary safety precautions of plumbing HVAC projects;

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions;

Ability to work in confined spaces;

Knowledge of technology (computer and/or mobile device) to enter materials, labor hours, status and details of the work done into the online work order management system

Possession of an appropriate and valid Maryland Motor Vehicle Operator’s License with driving record indicating five (5) or fewer current points of which no more than three (3) shall have been accumulated as a result of traffic violations while operating a Board of Education vehicle; and

Deemed as essential personnel and may be required to work day, night or weekend hours to meet the operational needs of the department.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: High school diploma, GED or completion of a vocational school program, with some experience.

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Journeyman Plumber License or CFC Certifications, Type I and II; or AWS Welding Certificate.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Supervises Apprentices and Trades Helpers.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. While performing duties of this job, the employee must have the strength and dexterity to perform all required tasks including the ability to climb a 40' vertical ladder, work from scaffolding and a bucket truck, the ability to lift and carry a minimum of 80 lbs., work in cramped interior spaces, and the ability to do extensive walking, bending, stooping, crawling and kneeling in the course of completing daily work assignments. The employee is required to maintain sustained physical effort and some exposure to dust, dirt, chemical solutions, solvents, odors, and adverse weather conditions.
