POSITION SUMMARY:The Classroom Teacher – William S. Schmidt Environmental Center works with students and educators to increase their knowledge of stream quality assessments and other environmental education content. The teacher will work with students, educators and partners to increase achievement through modeling, training and support.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Teaches the stream
ecology module at the Schmidt Environmental Center; Teaches the other
Schmidt Environmental Center modules when available; Assists the Outdoor
Education Specialist in the planning and coordination of school visits; Incorporates technology
in the instructional delivery to students and educators; Travels to schools to assist in preparing
schools for their visit to Schmidt or making presentations to schools regarding environmental
issues; Assists schools in certifying as a Maryland
Green School; Provides professional development
to educators in the area of environmental education; Assists schools with the implementation of
their on-site instructional program; Monitors and maintains
the apparatus and equipment of the Schmidt Environmental Center; Conducts and assists
with special projects and activities associated with Environmental Education
and the Schmidt Environmental Center program initiatives; Assists educators and
staff in providing a learning environment that supports Prince George's County
Public Schools and Maryland State Curricula; Supports educators
implementing Meaningful Watershed Educational Experiences; and Performs other duties
as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS Demonstrates superior
knowledge of pedagogy as it relates to best practices in science program
implementation and development; Thorough knowledge of
state standards, benchmarks, and alternative modes of assessment; Knowledge and use of
the MSDE Environmental Literacy Standards; Knowledge of current
trends in science education, including Common Core, Science, Technology,
Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Next
Generation Science Standards, and Green School Certification Requirements; Ability to relate
positively with peers, educators, students and parents; Ability
to work with diverse populations; Ability
to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural
education; Ability
to infuse technology into curriculum; Ability
to work effectively with students, parents, administrators, colleagues,
community, and other school system staff; Excellent
knowledge and understanding of the teaching and learning process; and Excellent
oral and communication skills.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university required with course work or experience in environmental education, outdoor education, science, or social studies preferred; Master's degree preferred. A minimum of three (3) years of successful teaching experience.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Holds or is eligible for a Maryland Professional Certificate appropriate to area of assignment.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The physical demands of the position are representative of an instructor teaching in the outdoors during the fall, winter, spring and summer seasons. Teachers are expected to walk and traverse long distances (3-4 miles) climbing steep slopes and traversing rough terrain. Instruction occurs rain or shine.
