POSITION SUMMARY:Under the direction of the Principal, the Classroom Teacher – Multiple Disabilities will be responsible for providing instruction to students with low incidence special needs including intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, and multiple disabilities. The incumbent will provide instruction and case management for students with significant vision and hearing deficits with additional disabilities, including significant developmental delays. The Classroom Teacher – Multiple Disabilities will implement best practice strategies in the classroom while recognizing individual instructional needs; provide accommodations and modifications to curriculum and materials to meet students' needs; communicate effectively with team members and parents; implement toileting protocols when required; and perform other responsibilities as assigned.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Provides instruction and case management
services for students diagnosed with multiple disabilities including
significant vision and hearing deficits special needs; Implements best practice strategies in the
classroom while recognizing individual learning styles and needs; Provides accommodations and modifications to
materials and instruction to meet students’ needs; Follows through on behavioral strategies and
interventions that are driven by the students’ Individualized Education Program
(IEP) and/or Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP); Utilizes the state standards in planning for
instruction and in the development of the IEP; Communicates effectively with team members and
parents; Participates in professional development
relative to special education and autism spectrum disorders; Implements toileting protocols when required; Collects data and analyzes data to provide
feedback to principals and the Department of Special Education on progress
monitoring and fidelity of the implementation of instructional supports and
intervention programs; Conducts educational assessments, writes
reports and interprets educational assessments; and
QUALIFICATIONS Demonstrated ability to provide
differentiated instructional techniques that inspire, motivate and meet the
individual educational needs of all students; Demonstrated ability to develop and
nurture an atmosphere and educational environment conducive to the
intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of all students; Demonstrated knowledge and understanding
of strategies in monitoring and evaluating student performance and developing
and implementing plans to improve student performance; Demonstrated ability in integrating
technology into curriculum; Demonstrated ability to work effectively
with students, parents, colleagues, administrators, office staff and other
members of the school community; Familiarity with best practices in the
field of low incidence special education in relation to services,
methodologies, communication systems, data collection, etc.; Knowledge
of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) and implementation of specially
designed instruction; Knowledge
in the continuum of services for students with disabilities, including
familiarity with the alternate assessment and framework; Good knowledge and understanding of the
teaching /learning process; and Excellent oral and communication skills.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's degree in applicable field of education from a regionally accredited college or university required. Previous experience in teaching special education, working with students that exhibit intensive learning needs, behaviors and/or working in a contained special education classroom setting as well as in the inclusive environment preferred.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Holds or is eligible for a Maryland Professional Certificate appropriate to area of assignment.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Oversees and provides support to classroom paraprofessional(s) and dedicated or classroom assistants, if applicable.

The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, the ability to adjust focus, and depth perception. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.
